Rebuilt and reopened in March after being destroyed by fire and closed for
a year, the fresh new room of this 32-year-old pub is still comfortable and
homey. The food's been updated too — lightened up with fresh fish and
salad offerings. It's a pretty, friendly place, full of dart players who know
their game, live music and a mix of regulars and occasionals, mostly young.
It's more a get-to-know-you spot than many pubs. The extensive menu is
inviting and the open-layout room is equally comfortable for dining or just
getting together for drinks. The Cal-Val standards and British specialties
are like good diner fare: barbecue chicken breast or skirt steak with steak
with mushrooms come with sides such as mashed and peas; juicy, salty
onion rings are a specialty. There are 14 draft beers, including Irish stouts
and lager, English ales and cider.
Pickwick packs a vital crowd into its small interior that features a casual
atmosphere and a pub menu with British faves like bangers and mash.
The pub is dark, not ambient or dim -- just dark... like the power has
gone out. Outdoor style lamps penetrate the darkness in soft yellow
circles, but if you're feeling claustrophobic, there is a small patio as well
as a brightly lit back room housing various video games and a foosball
table. Nightly entertainment features live music or DJs, but you'll get the
feeling this crowd would be here regardless. Somewhat raucous and
decorated with authentic touches validating the UK roots, Pickwick is a
local favorite. -- Ian Kenney (Photo: Ruth Yu)
The Pack is back at Pickwicks Pub. Since 1991, Pickwicks has shown
the Packer games...
A fire destroyed The Pub, but it's been rebuilt (along with the Packer's
offensive line). Join all your old friends and/or meet new ones. Watch
the Packers defeat Tampax Bay, the Minnesota Viqueens, the
Cincinnati Bangles and the ever ferocious San Francisco
Forty-Whiners. The newly rebuilt Pub features great new TV screens,
drinks, running water and soap in the bathrooms, drinks, free parking
in back (or pay if you want), drinks, breakfast, lunch, dinner, great
bratwurst and...did I mention drinks?
Just south of the Ventura Freeway (101) Pickwicks Pub is in Woodland
Hills on the south side of Ventura Boulevard between Canoga and
Desoto.
If you want to get drunk on Guinness while gossiping about the
Queen Mum, over a giant plate of bangers and
mash, then Pickwicks Pub is the place for you. Even if you don't
care about any of that stuff, you should still make a
visit! Pubs are awesome! Unlike your typical bar where isolated
drunks are quietly drinking themselves into an
alcoholic haze, pubs offer a livelier atmosphere where it's good to
interact with your fellow drinker. There's tall tales
and flat out lies told around the dartboard with good hearty food
and even heartier beer.
We went on a Monday, which is their trivia night, and it was one of
the best times I've ever had in a bar - or at least the
best time that I can remember. I started with good old pub ale, I had
Guinness, and a couple of appetizers. The
waitress suggested Pickwicks famous onion rings and banger bites.
Now, before we get into the food, the first thing
you have to understand about the British is that they fry everything
- mushrooms, fish, candy bars! It sounds crazy I
know, but it' so good. Pickwicks uses a secret creamy beer batter
when they fry and it is out of this world. Lite and
crispy, it just melts in your mouth. The portions are equally
impressive as well, and you could have quite frankly had
the appetizers as a meal. However to better inform our loyal
viewers, we continued on with possibly one of the
largest meals I've ever seen. I was talked into the Cornish Pastie,
which is a delicious puff pastry filled with seasoned
ground beef and veggies smothered in brown gravy. It was baked
to a golden brown, and was so delicious I couldn't
help myself. Served with Fries and baked beans, this was a British
meal that makes you want to get up and scream,
"God Save the Queen!" at the top of your lungs.
Pickwicks Pub was an excellent experience and even though we lost
at trivia, there's absolutely no question that the
Pub is worth a visit.
